Phil DeBar


Our Director, Phil DeBar, has been a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) since 1975, and has directed the Marin Barbershop Chorus since 2007.   Phil has resided in Santa Rosa, CA since 1990, with his wife Jane and daughters Suzanna and Emily, where he directed the Society chapter chorus for 14 years. He is a voice teacher, ensemble coach, and studio recording consultant and producer. 

He sang in his first quartet in a high school production of "The Music Man" in Syracuse, New York.   A Stanford graduate, he directed the “Mendicants” men’s a cappella ensemble, and was a member of the Stanford Chorale and the Stanford Marching Band.

For the past 41 years, Phil has performed in several BHS quartets including 5 regional champion quartets, directed a regional champion chorus, and competed in the International contest in a quartet, and in an International medalist chorus.  He has also substituted in Chanticleer, a professional classical a cappella ensemble.

He is also a local radio personality, originating vocal harmony-themed radio shows on KKUP-FM (Tuesday mornings 7-10 am since 1985) and KRCB-FM.  Phil and Deke Sharon co-produced “A Cappella Radio International” for the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) from 1996-2002

Phil was a BHS certified Contest Judge from 1993-2013.  He has judged and coached in both barbershop and contemporary festivals throughout North America and New Zealand, including the BHS International contest and four Harmony Sweepstakes Finals contests here at Marin Civic Center.
